Bluehost  Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

If you are new to searching for the best web hosting company you may have noticed that the name Bluehost is in almost every one of your searches. What makes them stand apart from the crowd? What benefits can Bluehost offer that other competitors can’t? What cons of using Bluehost might hold your business back? After some very thorough testing and comparisons, I put Bluehost through the ringer of web hosting and the results might be a little surprising. By the time you’re finished with this detailed review you will understand just what Bluehost can do and more importantly cannot do for your company.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 90%
  • Support 95%
  • Reliability 99%
  • Features 100%

PROS:

  • Most plans include unlimited storage, bandwidth, hosting and email addresses.
  • Free domain name for a year
  • Very easy to use
  • Excellent security features
  • SSL security and tons of eCommerce features

CONS:

  • Customer service reviews are inconsistent
  • They require add-ons for full functionality
  • A lot of pressure for up-sells
  • WordPress integrated plans can get a little pricey compared to competitors
  • Existing site transfer fee

Bluehost was founded in 2003 by Matt Heaton and Danny Ashworth in Provo Utah. They employ over 750 people who are dedicated to making sure your online business runs seemingly perfect. They are the number one hosting company recommended by WordPress. That type of reputation doesn’t come easy! They provide a broad spectrum of hosting plans that are suited for your individual needs. It seems like, when searching for the best hosting companies, Bluehost is always a frontrunner. Bluehost offers a wide array of features, tools and resources to their customers. They offer plans starting at $2.95 a month, but that can be deceiving. If you are using WordPress and want to utilize all of the offered features, like a dedicated server and unlimited websites, the cost can reach $23.99 per month pretty easily. They offer 5 types of hosting that can be customized to fit your business needs.

  • Cloud Sites
  • WordPress hosting
  • Shared hosting
  • VPS hosting
  • Dedicated hosting

Bluehost excels at security as well. You get 3 levels of spam protection from Apache Spam Assassin, Spam Hammer and Spam Experts. Everything is password protected. You can blacklist any IP address you feel is a threat or fraud. Bluhost offers excellent security features including single click integration with CloudFlare.

With Bluehost, the ease of use should definitely be noted as well. If you can operate an iPhone, you can navigate Bluehost. They use self explanatory icons for almost everything.

Bluehost specifically advertises how cheap they are. It seems like every mommy-blogger recommends Bluehost due to the price and ease of use, however there is an underlying topic that doesn’t seemed to be discussed much. They advertise a super low introductory rate of just $2.95 a month. Well, there are a few strings attached. That price comes with a 3 year contract. If you want to start with 12 months the price jumps to nearly $5.00 per month. If you want to test the waters and try them out for just a month or two, you’re out of luck. Site migration is seamless, however, they charge $149.99 to do so. If you want to take advantage of their 45 minute introductory walkthrough, its going to set you back $79.99. I know that up-sells and charges for features are pretty common in the hosting industry, but Bluehost does seem to nickel and dime their customers more than most of their competitors. If you are a blogger or have a simple site that you want to promote, Bluehost might be the perfect hosting company for you. If you have a technical site requiring a lot of customization, be prepared to shell out the bucks. As far as uptime, Bluehost is plenty reputable and reliable.

Bluehost is probably one of the most reviewed web hosting companies on the market. The reason is pretty simple – so many people use them. They have a lot of features at a great price. If you plan on building some extravagant, fully customized website that utilizes every one of your hosting companies features, the Bluehost price might start to rise more than you’d like. This goes with the territory of having a complicated website though, so you may already be aware of that. Bluehost has a long standing reputation with an unbeatable refund policy. The customer reviews reflect that. The only inconsistency I’ve found with their customer reviews is the customer service. Some reviewers have stated that the customer service department is next to impossible to get ahold of, while others say that the CS department is top notch. Luckily there are many more good reviews than bad, so take the bad reviews with a grain of salt. All in all, the customer reviews are pretty awesome for a web hosting company. The majority of Bluehost customers are happy to recommend their hosting services to anyone. If you’re looking for a do it all hosting company that is affordable,  easy to work with and customize, Bluehost is for you.

Summary

Bluehost has been around for over 14 years which seems ancient for a hosting company. This means that they have stayed on top of the hosting market for many years, proving reliability and credibility alike. Bluehost is used by some very influential companies. In fact, WordPress has given Bluehost their Number 1 recommendation for the best hosting companies to integrate with your WordPress theme. Bluehost offers 5 types of hosting and have an affordable package tailored to your needs in each category. If you are a blogger or running a multi-million dollar eCommerce website, Bluehost can easily handle your needs at an affordable cost. Bluehost might not be the cheapest on the market, but they offer features that most hosting companies simply do not have the resources to offer. These features, paired with 24/7 customer service and a reputation that is second to none, gave Bluehost the number 1 spot for web hosting. The price is fair considering all the extra advantages they have to offer. The package customization is simple and can save the average user a lot of money in the long run. If you want an easy to use customer interface paired with excellent support at a fair price, you won’t be disappointed with Bluehost.

HostClear

HostClear Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

HostClear is not new to the hosting world, but revamping their pricing and features in 2015 launched them into an entirely new category. HostClear uses shared hosting plans and offers a multitude of features to customize your blog or eCommerce site. They come in at an affordable price when you join their 36 month contract and have great uptime, as well as incredible customer service. If you are new to building a website, you’ll quickly discover that customer service can be your friend! So where does HostClear fall short? Well, after a very thorough review, I have compiled the details and will show you if  HostClear can accommodate your business needs.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 85%
  • Support 100%
  • Reliability 95%
  • Features 90%

PROS:

  • Excellent uptime
  • Excellent customer service
  • $200 in bonuses and credits to Google and Yahoo
  • Lots of available features
  • Unlimited Email Accounts

CONS:

  • Limited features for larger websites
  • Extras can get pricey
  • Customization is limited
  • Cannot change plans after purchase

Host Clear was founded in 2009 and specializes in low cost, unlimited hosting paired with excellent customer service and easy-to-use website development. Host Clear is proud to share their uptime which averages at 99.9% You can’t really go wrong with that. Host Clear has an in-house support team that is available 24/7 via chat, email or phone. The average response time is under an hour which is pretty much unheard of in this industry. Host Clear offers unlimited Email addresses, free marketing tools, a 45 day money back guarantee, and a free domain name. Another benefit of Host Clear is the $200 credit that you can use toward Google Adwords and Yahoo/Bing Ad campaigns. Host Clear seems to have filled the spot in the market made for first time website builders, making the process seamless and easy. They offer one type of shared hosting but allow you to use their custom cPanel (control panel) for free. The only downfall I’ve found with Host Clear is that you are unable to grow to more powerful severs. That being said, if you are looking for basic, entry level hosting and don’t think you’ll need to upgrade for a few years, Host Clear might be the right choice for you.

Coming in at only $2.99/month, Host Clear is a very affordable option. They offer one type of shared hosting and focus on customer service and an easy to use platform. At the price they offer for a 36 month contract, you do get a lot of features. The Control Panel (cPanel) is free and makes building your website a breeze. They offer 24/7 customer service and average less than a 1 hour response time. There is no charge to transfer your existing domain. On the downside, Host Clear does not offer SSL certificates and if you have a complicated website requiring a lot of features, you will find that the customization is rather limited. One thing is certain with Host Clear, they offer reliable, durable service at a fair price.

Host Clear has been around for a while and have acquired quite a few reviews. The reviews are all very similar which is a good thing. The reviews and customer testimonials all lead to the same place. Host Clear provides a great service, a very easy to use hosting platform with a lot of options. The ease of use is continually noted as well as the excellent response time of the customer service. The uptime has never been an issue. The biggest concerns that customers have is the inability to grow to more powerful servers and having to jump through hoops to get SSL certificates. This may be an issue to you, if you are running an eCommerce website with immense projected growth over the next 3 years. Customers also seem to be thrilled with the 45 day money back guarantee. If something doesn’t fit your needs, you have 45 days to decide for a full refund. With a solid hosting platform, great customer service and a very easy to use interface. Host Clear ranked quite high compared to other companies.

Summary

If you are looking for a basic, yet reliable hosting company with easy to use features and great customer service, look no further. Host Clear has a reputation of providing very reliable service with a high uptime to back it up. The customer service is on par with the best companies in the market. The control panel is designed for beginner site builders and built around its ease of use. If you have an eCommerce website, make sure you gather all details about SSL certificates before you purchase a package. If you have a complicated website, Host Clear may not fit your needs, as the customization for advanced web builders is lacking. At only $2.99 per month, they are priced competitively for those looking for basic hosting needs.

eHost Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

eHost has been around for nearly 20 years and has an excellent reputation in the industry. eHost offers a variety of hosting plans for it’s users to choose from. Potential clients of eHost need to know what to expect from one of the most affordable hosting companies in the market. We decided to take a look at the advantages and disadvantages offered by eHost’s business plan and what they have to offer their customers. Making an informed decision about a possible web hosting provider is crucial because chances are, you will be with them for a long time. By the time you are done with this review, we are confident that you will be able to make an educated decision about your web hosting needs. Will eHost fit your business needs? PROS:

  • Awesome price
  • Host unlimited sites on one account
  • Excellent uptime
  • Unlimited bandwidth and storage

CONS:

  • Price jumps for renewal
  • Money back guarantee refund terms
  • Average load speeds
  • Inconsistent support reviews

Summary

If you are a small to medium sized business, eHost has your hosting needs covered at a great price. The uptime is higher than the industry standard. The page load speed is average and the support has great reviews. My main suggestion is to be sure about your usage before you sign up for a plan. This is the biggest ding against eHost. If you shop for hosting with your parameters understood, you’ll be alright. If not, look for hosting that you can upgrade at a minimal fee. eHost does offer upgrades but the cost does start to rise quickly, so be aware of that. eHost is a reliable and affordable package with good customer service that will be able to fit your small to medium sized business needs easily.

Based out of Houston, Texas, eHost is a web hosting service that has been around since 1998. They proudly claim to operate over 1 million websites on their platform. They became part of the Endurance Group International umbrella in 2010 which leads to their credibility. Unlike most of the hosting services under EIG, they differ in that they are not plagued by some of the same issues that other EIG web hosting services are, like inconsistent uptime and seemingly nonexistent support. eHost boasts some of the best uptime’s of any web hosting service out there. Over a ten month period they averaged almost a perfect 100% uptime. Being one of the most affordable plans in the market, this is rather impressive, to say the least. The page loading times are at the faster end of the industry average. The only issue I have found with eHost is the bandwidth restrictions. If you have a very complicated or large eCommerce website, you may experience suspensions when you exceed your plans bandwidth, and upgrading will be quite a hassle. For being so affordable and reliable, eHost is a main contender when it comes to web hosting.

eHost offers one of the best priced plans on the market. Their basic plan (when paid in full) comes out to only $2.75 per month. That’s nearly a dollar less than some of the closest competitors. Many equally priced competitors start to fall short in certain areas, justifying their lower cost. That’s not the case with eHost, though. eHost is proud to have a very reliable uptime, average load speeds and great customer service. You get all of this for a very low cost and, because they are under the EIG umbrella, management will make sure that it continues. eHost provides a great service at a great price.

eHost has some pretty consistent user reviews and testimonials. The majority of users are very happy with their service from eHost. It seems the only real negative issues come from a complicated website exceeding the plans bandwidth. This seems like it could have been avoided if the customers understood the parameters before signing up for the shared hosting plan. WordPress users seem to be thrilled with eHost and the ease of the cPanel (control panel). Building a website is said to have been a breeze with eHost and the customer support is responsive and helpful. There are a few customers who have complained about tickets taking multiple days to be resolved, however there are so few, I imagine that they were isolated incidents. I think it’s safe to say the customer reviews about eHost are positive.

ideahost

Idea Host Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

Idea Host came into the hosting limelight in 2015 when they were founded. They quickly rose through the ranks thanks to their low cost hosting services. They offer an amazing refund policy. If Idea Host experiences any downtime they will refund a one month account credit. Idea Host is proud to provide a 99.9% uptime record. Their services include: free domain registration for the first year, unlimited domains, spam filters and unlimited emails. The hosting company offers 24/7 support and a free site builder. A lot of perks add up with Idea Host … so what’s the catch? Take a look at the full review below to find out if Idea Host stacks up to your expectations of a web hosting company.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 85%
  • Support 95%
  • Reliability 99%
  • Features 75%

PROS:

  • 3 different hosting plans
  • Easy to use web hosting
  • Free website builder tool
  • 100% uptime guaranteed

CONS:

  • Idea Host is new to the market
  • They do not offer upgrades
  • Price is competitive but a little high
  • No automatic website backup

Idea Host has been in the market since 2015 and has made quite the impression amongst their competition as well as their customers. They quickly rose through the ranks to be one of the best web hosting companies out there. The reason is simple, Idea Host has a simple platform that is very user friendly at an affordable price. The biggest drawback with Idea Host is the lack of upgrade options as well as the lack of hosting options. If you are running a blog or a small eCommerce website BlueHost will have no problem accommodating your needs. If you are running a large and complicated eCommerce business you may find yourself limited when trying to plan for future growth. Idea Host prides themselves in guaranteeing a 99.9% uptime which is pretty impressive. They have fast speeds and great customer reviews. The price is by no means the cheapest on the market but the reliability makes up for that. They have a great reputation but being in business for only a couple of years, they still have a little time before they can truly build a valid reputation.

Idea Host has very simple plans to suit your needs. This comes with a few advantages as well as a few disadvantages. Idea Host seems to be limited on their packages but, if you are after basic needs, they definitely have you covered at a fair price. If you are looking for something a little more customizable or plan on future expansion, you’ll notice that the price quickly jumps. The biggest issue is that you need to plan and decide if you need these options upfront. They do not offer upgrade options so if you need to change to a VPS server down the road when your blog goes viral, you’ll have to find new hosting, which can cost you transfer fees etc. Their pricing is simple and affordable but by no means the cheapest. If you are looking for a user-friendly interface with very promising uptime, Idea Host has you covered. If you are looking for something a little more customizable with a comparable price, you might want to take a look at Bluehost for your web hosting needs.

Idea Host has only been around for about 2 years so the reviews are fairly new. They are a very motivated and excited company looking to make their mark in the web hosting game. The reviews are pretty much the same across the board and explain a lot of benefits from the newer hosting company. This is why they rank so high with us here at ReviewsZone. Customers who need a hosting company to simply provide them with a domain and eCommerce options or a simple blog page- have found a happy home with Idea Host. The only drawback that I’ve been able to find, based on actual customer reviews, is the limited upgrade options. The price is comparable with competitors, uptime and load speeds are great, but customers seem to be limited with growth options. This may be a deal breaker if you plan on taking over the internet down the line. Customer service reports reveal excellent support available 24/7. With a little more time to grow, I believe Idea Host may become one of the frontrunners in the web hosting business.

Summary

Idea Host is a great hosting company for your basic hosting needs. When it comes to pricing, Idea Host is not the cheapest company out there, but they do offer solid hosting, great customer service and unbeatable uptime. If you want a completely customizable hosting platform with upgrade options for future growth, you may run into issues down the line. That being said, Idea Host is a new company who is growing more and more every day. Right now may be the best time to sign up with Idea Host in order to familiarize yourself with their features and benefits before they truly become a hosting powerhouse. If you are looking for ease of use and reliability at an affordable price, Idea Host is your best bet. If you have a complicated web platform, you may want to look at a hosting company with more features. Remember, more features mean more money out of your pocket.

iPage

iPage Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

iPage is one of the most popular web hosting platforms, and for good reason. They are known throughout the industry for their affordability and loads of features that make them a top choice for anyone looking to make their mark on the internet. What specific features do they offer? And maybe even more importantly, what features don’t they offer? I investigate what perks iPage offers that could make them the right, or possibly the wrong choice for your web hosting needs. I looked at many different areas that are relevant to someone looking for hosting for a web site. After reading this review, you will have a full understanding of the capabilities and deficiencies iPage has so you can make an educated decision if they are the right web hosting solution for you.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 95%
  • Support 90%
  • Reliability 70%
  • Features 85%

PROS:

  • Great 24/7 customer service
  • Tons of extras
  • Mobile friendly templates
  • Domain name transfers for $1.99
  • Competitive pricing

CONS:

  • Price jumps
  • Non refundable domain fee
  • Security falls short
  • Lack of Windows hosting options
  • Uptime/load speed

Owned by EIG (Endurance International Group), iPage has been around for more than 18 years. The company was created in 1998, but didn’t reach their pinnacle of success until after their re-launched in 2009. Now there are 6 offices world wide, with two data centers in the US serving over 1 million websites that have earned the top ranking for web hosting on most hosting review sites. What is it, though, that makes iPage such a good choice for your web hosting needs? Well, for starters, they are one of the cheapest on the market and offer a full money back guarantee for the remainder of your contract. iPage connects simply with Google Apps, PayPal, and more, which is especially good news if you are an ecommerce based business. You don’t usually assume that the cheaper options will have the great customer service, but iPage provides their clients above average support through their phone, email, and live chat options. They also offer many of the features that more expensive hosting services offer, including:

  • Unlimited hosting
  • Free domain name
  • Webmail
  • 24×7 customer support

iPage plans start out at $1.99, making them easily one of the most affordable options. The astounding part of this offer is that this rate applies to all their deals, whether you sign up for 36 months or 12 months. The price will obviously increase as you add on additional features.

iPage offers a variety of hosting services to cover all your needs:

  • Shared Hosting
  • VPS Hosting
  • Dedicated Hosting
  • WordPress Hosting

One of the drawbacks to iPage is the lack of Windows based servers. Uptime has also be an issue. In a recent study, iPage had an average uptime of 99.84% over 12 months. This is significantly lower than many other web hosts. As you know, having your server go down can be absolutely disastrous and quite costly. Page loading times are also 48% slower than the average (965ms vs. top company speeds of under 500ms).

Security on iPage uses only the SiteLock security system, while others use as many as 3 systems to ensure your security. iPage security does include daily backups so you can easily revert to a previous version in case you download a bad plugin or suffer the mishap of some other catastrophic event. This feature normally costs extra, but is included with the appealing $1.99 price point.

iPage‘s promotional pricing makes them a very attractive option for people with a limited budget. I also appreciate the consistent pricing regardless of contract length (minimum of 12 months). Unfortunately, when the promotional pricing ends, you’re looking at a 350% jump to $8.99 a month from the previous price of only $1.99.

You won’t have any trouble finding reviews for iPage. They are one of the most popular hosting services, which translates to lots of reviews. The promotional pricing is great and iPage is great for people with simple websites. The uptime and load speeds are a consistant sore spot for reviewers while the refund policy is something that many people are pleasantly surprised by. They will refund you all the remaining money from the time on your contract that you don’t use. The customer service is generally praised as being better than expected for what you are paying. Overall, the service provided by iPage is consistently more positive than negative. Users seem happy with the price, customer service, and features they get. Most customers are willing to recommend their services, as affordability and ease of use are their highest priorities. If these are important to you, then you may be adequately satisfied with iPage as your web host.

Summary

iPage has been around for 18 years. That is an incredibly long time for a web hosting company. After their re-vamp in 2009, they have been one of the top hosting services out there. Their affordability and ease of use are two of the biggest selling points. After their introductory rates, however, they become even more expensive than some of the best hosting services out there. That is definitely not ideal, but if you’re looking for a web host for a short time, this may suffice. The uptime and load speeds are a huge concern when it comes to deciding whether to use iPage or not. These are two very critical aspects of web hosting that can lead to disastrous results such as low sales and conversion rates. iPage offers 4 types of hosting, with different features that can be added to each package. Customer service is better than expected– they are available 24/7, answer questions directly, and add helpful details to make things easier for their clients. While the security is not as extensive as many others, it is still sufficient. If you are looking for a simple web hosting platform with good technical support and a promotional price that can’t be beat, check out what iPage can do for you.

FatCow

Fat Cow Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

Fat Cow web hosting is definitely no spring chicken in the industry. The company emerged in 1998 and has seen it all. Fat Cow has always been known for being a fun brand with a fun image. While they might be a fun company, one thing is for certain, they take hosting for smaller and medium sized companies very seriously. Fat Cow has such a long history that the analytics and hosting data are readily available and really consistent. I took a look at the pricing, hosting speed, uptime, customer service and what you get for your dollar in order to come up with a very thorough review of Fat Cow web hosting.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 75%
  • Support 75%
  • Reliability 95%
  • Features 90%

PROS:

  • Excellent uptime history
  • Huge amount of affordable features
  • Free domain and domain transfer
  • $200 in bonuses and credits
  • Money back guarantee

CONS:

  • Slower load speeds
  • Prices can escalate rapidly based on growth
  • Initial price is not the cheapest in the market
  • Customer support is inconsistent

Because Fat Cow has been around since 1998 they have had plenty of time to figure out the bugs, correct their mistakes and come up with some pretty unique features. This means that Fat Cow offers a very reliable service with an impressive uptime of 99.99%. Fat Cow also offers many cool and easy to use features, especially if you’re a WordPress user. The control panel is about as simple as it gets. One thing you should know is that, if you’re going to transfer an existing domain, you may need to wait up to 48 hours after your account activation. The page load speed could be faster, it is nothing to write home about, however I don’t see it being slow enough to affect most typical users. Fat Cow has a reputation that has taken them years to build. They are a powerhouse in the industry offering a very reliable service.

Customer service is great. The Fat Cow customer service reports and ticket times are above normal however I have seen reports of issues taking a little longer than expected with a few customers. I don’t think there are enough bad reports to be concerned about.

As you may understand by now Fat Cow hosting is a very reliable service with a lot of features. So what’s the catch? Well Fat Cow is owned by Endurance International Group. The giant conglomerate owns many hosting companies and I feel that you can get the same reliability and speed for a lower cost from one of their other companies. The initial cost is a little high at $3.15/month but if you’re using WordPress, that number climbs. If you want to incorporate some features (they have a lot), the number climbs higher. A lot of reviews stated that after a few years of using Fat Cow’s services, the cost went up well over 4x. This is the biggest drawback with Fat Cow. If you plan on growing into a large operation, this is something that may get costly. The reliability does help to justify the higher price that comes with Fat Cow.

One thing Fat Cow is not lacking in, is their customer reviews. Fat Cow has been around for almost 20 years now. They have had more than enough time to make an impact on the market. They have proven, and customers have confirmed, their brick house reliability. Customer testimonials are pretty inconsistent. While they rank high with reliability and features, they fall very short with support and price. Some customers have claimed to have waited weeks for any sort of resolution. Other customers say that they have had issues with more technical situations actually stumping the technical support. I have found that if you have basic needs for a simple website, the customer support is fast and helpful. Many of the Fat Cow testimonials talk about the price escalating over time way past the industry standard. I dug into this a little more and it looks like features that were necessary for growth were added causing the rise in pricing. This is to be expected with most hosting companies.

Summary

Fat Cow has a long history but they may just be a little out of their prime. They seem to be lacking when it comes to price and support. They have some great offers when you first sign up like $200 worth of ad credits and free domain transfer. They have a ton of features that you can play with, but they will cost you. If you have anything more complicated than a basic small business website, the customer service takes longer than you’d expect. You’ll also notice that the price is higher than some of the main competitors offering the same features. All in all, would I recommend Fat Cow? If you have a small business with limited growth where uptime is crucial, yes.

HostGator

HostGator Web Hosting Review

RANK

Overview

HostGator is a Houston based company and chances are you’ve heard of them one time or another. They have been one of the most used and most popular hosting companies for years. They have been around since 2002 and utilize two U.S. based data centers. What has made HostGator so successful in the hosting world? Is it their massive marketing budget? Customer service? Uptime? or something else? I took a look at all the analytics I could find and compared that to actual user testimonials to find out if HostGator is all that it’s cracked up to be.

%

Overall Rating

  • Price 80%
  • Support 75%
  • Reliability 75%
  • Features 80%

PROS:

  • Good variety of plans
  • Easy to use control panel
  • 45 day money back guarantee
  • $150 in offers for Adwords and Bing

CONS:

  • Customer service is inefficient
  • Uptime is inconsistant
  • Load times are slower than competitors
  • Unflattering user reviews

It should come as no surprise that HostGator is up for review here at ReviewsZone. Host Gator is easily one of the most recognizable brands in the hosting world. I aimed to find out why. Is it due to incredible customer service and great prices? Is it because of a numerous amount of features? Or is it just an incredibly large marketing budget?

When comparing uptime and load speed to other hosting companies I was shocked at the results. HostGator actually shows sub-par numbers for both uptime and load speed. They have made a drastic improvement over the years but only for the cloud hosting plan they provide. When it comes to their basic shared plans, they fall very short. After taking a look at customer service reports and tickets submitted, the response time was lacking, to put it nicely. Many people complained about less than adequate customer service a lack of resolution to simple problems.

Some good things you can expect from Host Gator hosting is unmetered bandwidth, a very easy to use cPanel (control panel) and $150 in credits you can apply to Google Adwords or Bing/Yahoo ads. HostGator does offer a wide array of plans that fit more individual needs. All in all, I have come to the conclusion that HostGator has some improvements to make, but if you take a look at their last year, they have already made a significant improvement. Let’s hope they keep improving!

HostGator has 7 different plans you can chose from and the price is pretty standard for the industry. But, is the product worth the price? Here’s what I’ve discovered by meticulously going over the details of all of their plans and the add-ons they have to offer. Starting at only $2.78, the initial basic plan price is very impressive. But for the quality and service you get for that price, you start to understand why it’s so cheap. If you do want to step up to a more quality plan with better uptime and load speeds, the cost rises more quickly than you’d expect. If you need to unlock all of the features HostGator has to offer, you just might experience a little sticker shock.

The reviews and testimonials are probably the biggest red flag with HostGator. A lot of customers have reported less than stellar customer service and ticket response time. If you are running an eCommerce based website, you know that time means money. Some reports have shown that HostGator has taken up to a week or longer to respond to a ticket. This can cost your business thousands of dollars or more! Sub-par customer service paired with a lower than the industry standard uptime can be disastrous. HostGator has vastly improved in the last year and reports show that they will continue to do so over the next few years. The reviews and testimonials are 55% negative across the board. For being one of the top 10 hosting companies, this is simply unacceptable. Keep in mind, though, the improvements they have made are already easing customers worries. Give them a little time and HostGator could show their true potential.

Summary

HostGator must have a very large marketing budget because their name is well known in the hosting world. When I compare all the reports, however, I have to conclude that I would not recommend Host Gator for anyone who needs more than basic hosting. If you purchase their base plan you will find that it’s one of the best priced on the market. If you have a very simple set up, chances are you will never need to submit a ticket or call customer service. If you have an eCommerce business, you might want to avoid the basic plans due to inconsistent uptime and terrible customer service response time. When you get into their more pricy plans, such as cloud hosting, the uptime is far better and customer service response times are faster. This means you’re going to have to spend a little extra with HostGator. Most other hosting companies don’t believe this is fair and would prefer to earn your business rather than buy it with a large marketing budget.

Overview

JustHost is a common name in the industry. They have been around for a while and have had great success. They are one of the bigger hosting platforms out there and they had some great reviews. It seems like things are changing with JustHost, so we wanted to see if the changes in their services have changed the once positive outlook. They have always been proud of a quality of service that once set the industry standard, but we did some digging to see if these changes are beneficial for the modern website. We analyzed JustHost‘s performance records, features, pricing and user testimonials to come up with a thorough review.

CONS:

  • Below industry standard page load times
  • Sub-par customer service
  • High priced for the service
  • Too many up-sells

JustHost has been around since 2008 and when they started everyone loved their services. They offered awesome uptime and faster than industry standard page loading times. The features they offer are great and the customer service was top notch for the price. JustHost has gone through a lot of changes over the past few years and it seems that roughly 2-3 years ago, businesses started to take a hit. Uptime started to be more and more inconsistent, page speeds started to slow down and prices started to rise. It seems like all at once, the websites that they were hosting started to have technical issues that customer service was less than thrilled to resolve. This has left a bade taste in current customers mouths and has popped up a lot of red flags for newer customers. Before I go too far, JustHost does have a lot of features you can utilize and a very easy to use control panel. Those benefits have been raved about for years by JustHost users. It seems things are changing and I don’t think they’re changing for the better.

At a basic package price starting at $3.95, JustHost is by no means the cheapest on the market. In fact they end up on the pricy side of similar companies offering the same benefits. Many users state that the prices continually rise, especially if you decide to implement any of their many features. Using WordPress raises the cost as well. A few years ago, this price might have been justified but these days, where competition in the hosting market is everywhere, you have to meet all the users needs at a fair price. JustHost just doesn’t measure up at this price.

JustHost has been in the game for a while and user reviews and testimonials used to be very consistent and very positive. Uptime, customer service/support and features were something that attracted many users, but recently things have changed. The majority of user reviews and testimonials from about 2-3 years ago have gone from being positive to rather negative. Customers have seen a decline in customer support as well as a drop in uptime. The features are still there and they are awesome. In fact nobody has really anything bad to say regarding the amount of features you do get when you decide to go with JustHost for your hosting needs. Just hope you never run into a technical issue because you might be up the creek without a paddle. As far as uptime, customers have noticed a steady decline over the last 2 years and there is no change in sight.

Summary

JustHost used to be awesome, customers were proud to recommend them to any size business or blog. Things seemed to have changed over the years and not for the better. JustHost seems to be lacking in a few very important departments and their customers are taking a hit. JustHost has made a lot of changes and they just don’t seem to be working out. If they were a newer company coming in with a much lower price, I wouldn’t be so critical but JustHost is not new to the hosting game and they have proven that they can be one of the top hosting companies. I wonder if they will bring back the old way of doing things. I hope they do because they were once a great company to be with and support.
